Core pilar of website design and development

The core pillar of web design and develoment is userfriendly, user experience and meaning of the website. Below are some of the considetauons:

Clarity:

To facilitate positive experiences

Concise Information Hierarchy: Presenting information in a clear hierarchy helps users to quickly grasp the most important aspects of the product or service. This prevents cognitive overload and keeps users engaged.

Clear Navigation Paths: Ensuring clear navigation paths on the landing page allows users to easily find what they are looking for. This reduces frustration and encourages exploration of the website or product.

Intuitive Layout and Design: Clarity in design elements, such as buttons and menus, enhances usability.

Consistency

To build trust

Visual Consistency: Maintaining consistent visual elements such as colours, fonts, and imagery throughout the website creates a cohesive and familiar experience for users.

Interaction Patterns: Consistent interaction patterns, such as button styles and navigation menus, provide users with a predictable experience.

Content Consistency: Consistency in content tone and style reinforces the brand voice and personality. Users feel more comfortable and confident engaging with content that is consistently presented in a manner that aligns with their expectations

Consumer Behaviour

To connect with the target users

Audience insights: Insights into audience segments (e.g. personality profiles, attitudes, purchasing behaviour etc.) offer valuable opportunities to enhance user journey.

Decision-making cues: Applied behavioural insights to optimise placement, wording, and design of the Call-to-Action button can tap into user’s decision-making processes and increase the likelihood of a conversion.

Similarity

To make website elements similar to increase brand awarness

The law of similarity states that we perceive elements as a group if they are similar in shape, size, colour, direction, or other characteristics.

How to apply:

  • Group and clustering: Group related items together using similar styles.
  • Visual consistency: Use consistent fonts, colours, shapes, and sizes for similar types of elements.
  • Interactive elements: Buttons, links, and other interactive elements that perform similar functions should look alike.
  • Primary CTAs: Design primary call-to-action buttons with a distinctive but consistent style.
  • Menu items: Use similar styles for all items in a navigation menu to indicate they are all navigation options.
  • Visual hierarchy: Apply similar styles to elements that are on the same level of importance.

Meaningfulness

The law of meaningfulness, also referred to as the law of familiarity, states that human tend to group visual elements when they form a meaningful or personally relevant object, item or visual scene.

How to apply:

  • Clear Communication: Design elements should convey their purpose and function clearly to users. Use familiar icons, labels, and language to ensure that users understand the meaning behind each element.
  • Contextual Relevance: Present information and features in contexts that make sense to users. For example, if offering a “Buy Now” button, place it close to the product description or image where users are likely to make a purchase decision.

Saliency

Saliency refers to the tendency to focus on pieces of information that stand out more in a given context at the expense of other available information.

How to apply:

  • Ensure key information stands out. For example, make any CTA buttons prominent with a different colour.
  • Stand out from competitors by creating a unique design that grab user’s attention.

Text

Fonts considered accessible typically adhere to certain principles aimed at maximizing readability, especially for users with visual impairments or reading difficulties.

How to apply, according to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG):

  • Contrast (1.4.3): Text should have sufficient contrast against its background. This typically means a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.
  • Resize Text (1.4.4): Users should be able to resize text up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
  • Text Spacing (1.4.12): Ensure that text can be adjusted to meet the following standards without loss of content or functionality: Line height (1.5), Paragraph spacing (2 times the font size), Letter spacing (0.12 times the font size), and Word spacing (0.16 times the font size).

Perceivable

Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
How to apply:

  • Text Alternative: Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, braille, speech, symbols or simpler language.
  • Time-based Media: Provide alternatives for time-based media (e.g., audio description/caption).
Adaptable: Create content that can be presented in different ways (for example simpler layout) without losing information or structure (e.g., heading).
  • Distinguishable: Make it easier for users to see and hear content including separating foreground from background (e.g., colour, contrast, resize text).

Unified Connectedness

The Law of Unified states elements that are visually connected are perceived as more related than elements that are not connected. How to apply: Grouping: When designing interfaces, organise related elements into visually connected groups. Form fields: Fields that belong together, such as name, email, and phone number, are visibly connected in web forms by alignment and proximity.
